Rock and Roll mingling
Thursday night I went to the Battle of the Bands with my friends
NL and
Flower in the Dale and heard more great music from local bands. I continue to be amazed at the wealth of talented musicians in Bakersfield. I was disappointed that I didn’t get to hear
Karmahitlist, I was really looking forward to hearing them again. I was also looking forward to Seantastic’s punk-rock-God look and punk-makeup! I’ll have to get my punk-makeup-envy fix at their next show.
Ridicule had a great punk rock music version of
Old McDonald had a Farm that everyone in the crowd loved! The
Filthies were in the house… I met bass player Kelley and talked to him a little bit about writing and music. Guppy said hello and remembered seeing me at their show at the Mint. I Hung out with Kenny for a little while and went on one of the funniest verbal rides of my life! I heard filthy jokes, and filthy stories, (things I wouldn’t dare repeat-- I’ve been sworn to secrecy!) begged for Filthies t-shirts, and learned that Filthies underwear are coming soon. I’ve gotta get me some of those! I thanked him for the punk-music-history-lesson comment he left on my blog.
“Oh, I could have went off so much more… but half way through I thought, who gives a shit!” Kenny said.
I think he was surprised to find out that the skeleton-head-girl icon on my blog was ME.
“I like your skeleton-head-girl picture on your blog.” He said.
“Thanks. NL designed that for me.” I told him.
After Ridicule’s performance I watched the lead singer come off the stage and receive high fives and hugs from all the Filthies. Aside from all the great music I’ve been hearing out of local bands lately, I’ve really noticed the camaraderie and friendships that exists between band members. It is refreshing to see such support among bands at a competitive setting such as the Battle of the Bands.
After the Battle of the Bands NL and Flower in the Dale and I stopped by the Mint for a quick drink. The Mint was quiet for a refreshing change.
Broken Record Gospel (who I saw play at the Silver Fox and really enjoyed their music), was there hanging out and playing pool. In an once-in-a-lifetime pool moment-- Colin of Broken Record Gospel scratched and hit me with the cue ball while I was walking back from the bathroom with Flower in the Dale. I went to pick up the cue ball and give it to him… but another guy beat me to it.
“Don’t you owe the lady an apology?” Flower said to him.
“I’m so sorry!” He apologized.
“It’s ok. It didn’t hurt at all.” I replied smiling.
I should have kept the cue ball… it would have made a great rock star souvenir.
That was a killer night! What a great pair of conversations I had with Leslie Flores about art, music, and blogs, and Ben of Broken Record Gospel about their music... we toasted to such positive momentum!
