Rocky Horror… Stage Beauty
Friday night I was officially inducted into a cult. The cult following of the
Rocky Horror Picture Show that is! The Bakersfield Community Theater was performing the play version of Richard O’Brien’s
Rocky Horror Picture Show and I was lucky enough to get to tag along with
NL to the media preview night
(read his review with pictures here). This was my first experience ever with the
Rocky Horror Picture Show; I hadn’t even seen the movie. I had no idea what to expect. I was given a brown paper bag with props upon entering the theater which contained a glow stick, a popper, a balloon, toilet paper, a zip lock bag full of sparkling confetti, a paper horn and playing cards. I pulled each strange item out of the bag wondering what in the world I was supposed to do with these things. Thank goodness there was an instruction sheet included.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is nothing like I’ve ever seen before… great costumes, great songs, great lingerie (even on the guys) and the best evil transvestite ever! A show where not only is the audience entertained but they participate by yelling out comments to the actors and dancing the ‘time warp’! Truly a fun and exciting experience! The show opens May 6th with midnight showings; I hope to go experience it all over again. If you are looking for something fun to do… this show is it.
With songs and images of the
Rocky Horror Picture Show still swirling in my head, I went home and watched my newest favorite movie
Stage Beauty once again. Stage Beauty stars Billy Crudup, in what I believe to be his best performance ever, Claire Danes, Rupert Everett and Ben Chaplin. If you haven’t seen this movie yet you really should run out and rent the DVD and watch it. Set in the 1660’s when Shakespeare was played nightly in theaters. A time when it was illegal for women to act on stage so all of Shakespeare’s women were MEN. Stage Beauty has theater, lavish costumes, men in drag, gender issues, a fight for equality for women, identity crisis, and the struggle to be a man. All of that plus sexy
Billy Crudup to look at too… what more could a girl ask for in one evening.
