Zingo’s the wonder bar…
The best grilled ham & cheese sandwiches in Bakersfield are at Zingo’s Café on Buck Owens’s Blvd. I don’t know why but I just love grilled ham & cheese sandwiches. I always feel like a kid for ordering them in front of other people but the guilt doesn’t stop me from ordering these wonderful grandma-style homemade feeling sandwiches.
Last weekend after the Norfolk show at the Boiler Room a bunch of us ended up at the Zingo’s Bar, which is attached to the Café. The guys from Norfolk were playing pool and country music on the jukebox, home style fries and jalapeno poppers were ordered and I ordered a grilled ham & cheese sandwich. It was hands down the best grilled ham & cheese sandwich I’ve had in Bakersfield. Zingo’s even beats the 24th Street Café. Who knew that Zingo’s was such a gem! Zingo’s to me was always the hang-out of my spastic disorganized college creative writing teacher. And now I wonder if he went there for the grilled ham & cheese sandwiches instead of the truck-driving people watching writing opportunities that he talked about in class.
Zingo’s bar also happens to be the home of the worst double date I have ever been on in my life. A couple of years ago, my best girlfriend tried to set me up with one of her boyfriend’s friends. The four of us had Chinese food and then ended up at Zingo’s Bar to play pool. I love my girlfriend, but the old gray-haired loser guy she tried to set me up with is another story all together. One of the worst dates I’ve ever been on. I won’t give you all the details. They’re too scary! Let me just say that he and I were so awfully mismatched it was horrific. And I had a terrible time. Now whenever my girlfriend wants to buy me something or pay for dinner and I don’t want her too… she plays the
I made you suffer through that horrible date with ‘old gray-haired loser guy’ card and I give up and let her pay. Because she’s right… she owes me big time for that one.
