When I grow up I want to be just like them…
“When I grow up I want to be just like them.” I whispered to ‘C’ after meeting two New York couples.
“Me too.” ‘C’ whispered smiling.
We had just met two amazing couples from New York that were vacationing in Maui together. Back home in New York they lived on the same street and had been best friends for years. The two men golfed together and had been golfing all over Maui, while their wives had been parasailing, hiking, snorkeling, and shopping together. Today they had convinced their husbands to join them on the
waterfall excursion. Both couples had been married for almost 25 years.
“How did you meet?” ‘C’ asked them.
“We were high school sweethearts.” One of the pretty dark haired New Yorker's husband replied.
“I was 16, I didn’t know there was anyone else around to date.” The pretty dark haired New Yorker joked.
“I love you baby.” She said to her husband winking.
“I love you too.” He said smiling, looking into her pretty face as if they were still honeymooners.
“Are you coming back to Maui for your 25th anniversary?” ‘C’ asked them.
“No. We’re going to Aruba.” Her husband replied.
“That’s where we had our honeymoon.” She explained.
“Oh! That’s so romantic!” ‘C’ exclaimed.
“He has his moments.” The pretty New Yorker exclaimed smiling.
“And how did you meet?” ‘C’ asked the other pretty sun-kissed New Yorker.
“We met in college.” She explained.
“What do you all do?” The two pretty New Yorkers asked.
“I work for State Farm.” ‘E’ replied.
“I work in a Bank.” ‘C’ stated.
“And I’m an office manager for a Civil Engineering firm.” I replied.
“Which one of you is in engineering?” The sun-darkened New York husband asked.
“I am.”
“What kind of engineering?” He asked me.
“Civil.” I said giving him my business card.
“I’m an engineer.
Structural.” He stated giving me his business card.
“My boss has done structural in the past, but we pretty much stick to civil.” I explained.
“Your wife is falling asleep in the back of this van.” The pretty sun-kissed New Yorker said to her friend’s sun-darkened husband.
“I’m dreaming about you baby!” The half asleep pretty New Yorker yelled out to her husband.
Wow. I thought. After almost 25 years they still flirt with each other.
So, what are you guys doing in Maui? Vacation?” ‘C’ asked the two New York women.
“Getting away from our kids.” The pretty sun-kissed New Yorker replied.
“We own a time-share in Maui. We brought our kids with us last year, this year we wanted an
adult vacation.” She explained.
“How fun!” ‘C’ exclaimed.
How fun indeed. I thought to myself. I had never met such fabulous couples like these people from New York before. They seemed to have the most wonderful lives. Loving, long-lasting marriages, kids, great careers, best friends that traveled together, exciting lives in New York City. In 25 years, they’ve probably had their share of struggles or hardships to overcome, but they seemed to have wonderful lives and relationships. They had the kind of life I’ve always wanted. The kind of life I imagine my
Gemini twin is off somewhere living for me.
When I grow up… I want to be just like them. I thought dreamily.
