What do you think I am?
“Are you Greek?” A nearby ankle patient at physical therapy asked me.
“Greek?” I asked perplexed.
I knew where he was going with his comment but I wanted him to explain.
“You just look like that missing Greek girl.” He stated.
“Missing Greek girl!” I said a little shocked.
I wasn’t expecting that one! I thought to myself.
“I don’t know if I am Greek, but I know I’m not missing.” I replied amused.
“I know you’re not the missing girl.” He back peddled.
“I just meant you look like her and I wondered if you were Greek is all.” He explained.
“I don’t know if I am Greek.” I replied smiling.
A similar incident occurred recently at the
Dia de los Muertos art show at the Empty Space. I was manning the door when one of the artists introduced himself.
“Are you one of the artists?” He asked.
“No, I’m friends with one of the artists, and I’m helping out here at the door.” I explained.
“Well you’re perfect for this show, you’ve got that whole
Latin thing going on.” He stated before walking away to mingle.
I didn’t know if he meant it as a compliment, but he had just told me he thought I was Latin.
When I was married and had a Hispanic last name, people assumed I was Hispanic. Even to this day waiters in Mexican Restaurants will speak to me in Spanish and I have to tell them that I don’t speak Spanish.
This sort of thing happens to me all the time. People are always inquiring about my nationality. However, I don’t have an answer for them. I usually just say:
“I don’t know what I am, I’m adopted.” Although, this was the first time I had been asked if I was Greek. Usually people think I’m Latin, Italian, or French. My family’s last name is Irish, but I don’t know if I am Irish even though it’s my name.
I like when people think I’m Italian or French! In my opinion, two of the most beautiful women in the world are Italian and French. While I don’t claim to possess their unique beauty or even look like them, both French
model and
actress:
Juliette Binoche and Italian
model and
actress:
Isabella Rossellini have similar physical traits that I have. Those being: fair skin, dark hair, big eyes, full lips and a long nose.
What do you think I am? Can clues to my origins be found by reading my blog-- delving into my mind? Does my description of: fair skin, dark hair, big brown eyes, full lips and a long nose give you any insight to what nationality I am? Or do you need to see a
picture to make a guess? Let me know what you think I am… send your guesses to:
