Farewell to Karma
On December 10, 2005 at around 11pm I received a phone call from
NL…
“You won’t like my latest blog.” He said.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Go read it.” He urged. Never one to tell me what’s on his site, instead making me read for myself.
I had already turned my computer off for the night, so I turned it back on and read the
sad news of the break-up of one of my favorite local rock bands: Karmahitlist.
My heart was broken. No more
Karmahitlist music, no more great Karmahitlist shows, no more bigger-than-life Punk-Rock-God, Seantastic. Life just wouldn’t be the same. How would I live without Karmahitlist?
I went to bed with a heavy heart for the loss of Karmahitlist and remembered all the great Karma moments of the past year.
My first encounter with Karmahitlist was back in February at Riley’s Tavern where I fell in love with their music, their energy, their larger-than-life performance, and with
Seantastic’s punk makeup look. His punk makeup look was so good I had punk makeup envy and dubbed him the Punk-Rock-God on my blog.
And then Cesareo went on tour for a few weeks and Karmahitlist was put on hold until May when
news of a Karmahitlist performance was heard in the wind. I got excited. Karmahitlist was back.
If I hadn’t already
been in love with Karmahitlist, I would have fell really hard at their come back performance in June at the
Reggae Fest. They were amazing! And I was really hooked.
Karmahitlist invaded the
big motorcycle show at the fair grounds and I took
Flower in the Dale with me to appease my
Karma obsession.
But my all time favorite Karmahitlist moment was a
hot night in July at Fishlips when Karma let down their guard and went acoustic. Acoustic, Karma was so intimate... they melted my heart.
I was so in love with Karmahitlist, I
braved Jerry’s pizza in August to see them perform. They debuted a new song that night and overcame huge technical difficulties.
And then Seantastic broke his ankle and Karmahitlist had to withdraw from the Hurricane Relief show in September. They were missed that day.
I wrote this about their come back show Halloween weekend in October:
“What can I say that I haven’t already said a hundred times about Karmahitlist? I love their music. I love their stage presence. I love to watch Seantastic perform. But what was unique about Karmahitlist Halloween weekend is that it was the first time they had played together since Seantastic broke his ankle and they were still amazing. Seantastic put on a fantastic show wearing a brace on his broken ankle; you couldn’t even tell he was injured because he poured his all into the performance.”I didn’t know at the time that I was watching the very last Karmahitlist performance.
Farewell Karma...
I will miss your music, your verve, your energy, your stage presence, your larger-than-life performances, and Seantastic’s punk makeup look. I will miss having punk makeup envy. But I will especially miss writing about Karmahitlist and Seantastic the Punk-Rock-God. You leave me with your music… and
Drowning in your
Poetry.
I wish you all: Sean, Cesareo, Jim and Tim all the best in your new musical endeavors. Hope to see all of you perform again.
