Dear Diary… I have a Crush!
Last week those
Westbury boys did a little name-dropping as an extra inducement while
propositioning me. The name they dropped was:
Diary.
I’ve been wanting to see Diary perform ever since Pablo Alaniz, Diary’s frontman and drummer of
Norfolk, played guitar and sang Tom Petty songs with Pete Prevost another member of Norfolk as a special surprise at a
Norfolk show back in June of 2005. James Ratliff of Norfolk once told me that Pablo was probably the best guitarist in their band, that he was one of those rare musicians that played several instruments extremely well. I would venture to classify him as one of the best guitarists in Bakersfield. I knew him as a humble talented musician who always said hello when we happened to be hanging out at the same place.
Last
Tuesday night at Jerry’s was the first opportunity I’ve had to see Diary perform and I was not disappointed. I have always loved Pop/Rock music. I love Pop singers voices. They are smoother, a higher octave, and more emotional. My favorite Pop star
Darren Hayes has a voice like that and so does Pablo Alaniz. Diary’s music is pure Pop richly layered over Rock and Roll with amazing guitar solos and nothing like I’ve heard in Bakersfield to date.
I stood in Jerry’s basement watching Diary perform. Pablo Alaniz is a Pop/Rock star and I’m not even sure he’s aware of it. And in that moment I knew I was hooked. I was hooked on Diary’s Pop/Rock music. That moment of discovering a fabulous Pop/Rock band in Bakersfield almost rivaled the moment I met Pop star Darren Hayes at his screening of his new album:
The Tension and the Spark. He too was a humble talented musician when I spoke with him.
Dear Diary… I have a crush on your Pop/Rock music and I can’t wait to see you perform again. You do Pop/Rock music like no one else in town...
What a great night for music.
