The lady rock star… Jessie Deluxe
Jessie Deluxe, the lady rock star, was in town last Wednesday night at Rileys. This was my third time to see Jessie Deluxe perform and even though her band was without their bass player, they were still amazing. Jessie was amazing. She can shred a mean guitar and sings edgy soulful lyrics that grab a hold of your heart. But the thing I love most about Jessie Deluxe is the transformation she undergoes when she performs, the persona she becomes.
I had gone down to Rileys with
NL to watch Jessie Deluxe perform. We’re both big fans of her music and NL wanted to interview Jessie on the Buck City Podcast. I went to get a couple drinks from the bar and when I came back, Jessie Deluxe was standing at our table talking with NL. She was humble as she spoke genuinely about her music and her band’s future direction while simultaneously exuding a quiet sense of power as if she wore a political power suit or Arthur Fonzerelli’s leather jacket instead of her simple black t-shirt and pants.
“Hey! I remember you from our last show here. How are you?” She asked me.
“I’m good.” I replied amazed that Jessie Deluxe remembered little ol’ me.
She lingered at our table a few minutes more before going off to prepare for her set.
When Jessie Deluxe took the stage, the transformation from humble woman musician to a powerful I am woman - I can conquer the world - I am confident - hear me roar - woman rock star took place. Her larger than life stage presence makes you believe in her when she holds a screaming note that seems to go on for an eternity. A screaming note full of every woman’s pain, love and truth. A screaming note full of her own pain, love and truth. A screaming note full of melancholy moments. She embodies the spirit of a powerful woman rock star and through her music she shares this power with her audience. I was in awe of Jessie Deluxe. I wanted to be Jessie Deluxe. We all did.
Jessie Deluxe, the lady rock star, is beloved by a Bakersfield star-struck crowd and this Bakersfield woman.
