Hey, Hey, We’re the Filthies…
I went downtown last Saturday night to hear the Filthies play. One of my favorite local bands since the first time I heard them play at the Mint, the Filthies are responsible for introducing me to punk music. They not only introduced me to punk music, they made me like it. While I prefer the Filthies style of rural rock punk over the hard-core punk music, nevertheless… there is now punk music in my cd collection.

The Filthies at the Key Club in Hollywood

“Wow! They sound incredible!” I said to my friend sitting next to me.

It had been a while since I had heard the Filthies perform. For one reason or another, I had missed their last few shows. They were fresh back from recording their new album and sounded better than ever.

“Is that a new song?” I asked.

“Yeah.” She replied.

“I love it!” I exclaimed.

“Kenny should always wear a kilt with his punk rock attire.” I whispered to my friend.

“Oh yeah!” She said.

Punk rock and kilts… to quote an old California surfer friend of mine-- ‘Hella Sexy’.

Kenny ‘Motor’ Mount second from the left with some kilt-wearing friends.

Who are these guys? New songs, incredible sound and a kilt! I thought as I sat there awestruck watching the Filthies perform. I felt like I didn’t know them at all.

Watch the Filthies music video Embalm You

And then the answer of who these new and improved Filthies were came to me as the theme song from the Monkees started playing in my head...

Hey, hey, we're the Filthies...

I thought the Filthies could do a great punk version of this song. I could hear it in my head and could see the music video with the Filthies mimicking the Monkees in the opening to their TV show.

Can’t you hear it?

Here we come, walkin’
Down the street.
We get the funniest looks from
Every one we meet.
Hey, hey we’re the Filthies
And people say we filthy around.
But we’re too busy singing
To put anybody down.
We go wherever we want to,
Do what we like to do
We don’t have time to get restless,
There’s always something new.
Hey, hey, we’re the Filthies
And people say we filthy around.
But we’re too busy singing
To put anybody down.
We’re just tryin’ to be friendly,
Come and watch us sing and play,
We’re the young generation,
And we’ve got something to say.
Any time, or anywhere,
Just look over your shoulder
Guess who’ll be standing there
Hey, hey, we’re the Filthies
And people say we filthy around.
But we’re too busy singing
To put anybody down.
(break)
Hey, hey, we're the Filthies

And people say we filthy around.
But we're too busy singing
To put anybody down.
We're just tryin' to be friendly,
Come and watch us sing and play,
We're the young generation,
And we've got something to say.
Hey, hey, we're the Filthies
Hey, hey, we're the Filthies
[repeat and fade]
extra verse:
Hey, hey, we're the Filthies,
You never know where we'll be found.
So you'd better get ready,
We may be comin' to your town.

Imagine the Filthies doing this music video…

I grew up watching and loving the Monkees and I would love to see my favorite local punk rock band take the Monkees theme song and make it their own.

Great things are happening with the Filthies music... be a part of it, support Bakersfield's own rural rock punk band, the Filthies.
