How do you handle stress?
My co-workers and I sat around the conference table wide-eyed and searching for a response to the loaded question my boss had just asked.

“How do you handle stress?”

It was a loaded question because just a week ago my boss dropped an economic bomb on us and we had spent the last seven days more stressed out than we’ve ever been in our entire careers.

Career? Did ten years at a job turn it into a career? It didn’t feel like a career when my dreams went in an entirely different direction.

It was also a loaded question because my boss wasn’t asking it to alleviate our stress; it was his icebreaker.

So there we sat, three managers and my boss, searching for politically correct words to answer his loaded question while he waited.

“I shut myself up in my garage and build things.” One of my co-workers responded.

My boss nodded his head and looked at me.

“I shut the world out, watch DVD’s, read books and eat ice cream.” I replied.

He nodded again and turned to my other co-worker who just shrugged his shoulders and remained silent.

Avoidance! Apparently that’s how we handled stress.

Avoidance wasn’t a new revelation for me. I’d been handling stress through avoidance for years. During my divorce I was practically a hermit and read five books a week; the used bookstore knew me by name. I always reverted to avoidance or escapism when under extreme stress.

I had been practicing my stress avoidance regime for the last several months while buying my first home. I was a pro at it. You see I was buying a house from a bank that wouldn’t respond while loan documents, interest rates, and commitment letters expired over and over again. Every time I turned around, I was being charged another five hundred dollars because the seller’s bank wasn’t responding. I had given notice on my rental because my home was supposed to close in April. I had to be out by the 31st and I didn’t know where I was going to live. Estimates to move and store my belongings were outrageous, and my boss’ economic bomb, that just upped the stress ante. Every day was a ‘bucket day’!

It had gotten to the point that I was having a hard time functioning; writing would have been impossible, so my blog suffered. All I wanted to do was crawl into the darkness and escape my problems until by some miracle everything worked out.

Darkness by Darren Hayes

I still believed deep down inside that everything would eventually work out. I was still fighting for my dreams. But right now… I was just handling the stress.

Sidebar Goodies!
There are a lot of new and exciting things going on in my blog sidebar these days…

I’ve added a widget to my goodreads.com book page so you can check out what I’m reading. I’ll be adding books to this page periodically so keep checking back.

I also added a widget to my new flickr.com page where I’ve begun uploading some of my photos. I’ll be adding more photos as I go through all the photos on my computer. I’ve been wanting to start a flickr page for a long time now, and finally just sat down and started uploading photos. So if you like photography, check out my photos.

One of the most exciting new things in my blog sidebar is the link to buy the erotic fiction anthology I’m on the cover of, 39 and Holding… Him. You know you want to buy the book, so go ahead and buy it!

And don’t forget to buy Noveltown products while you’re buying! I’ve put the links to buy Lords: Part One by N.L. Belardes and the Noveltown Review literary magazine in my blog sidebar. If you don’t already have these Noveltown products you’ll want to pick them up!

All these new sidebar items sure make my blog sidebar more colorful… and hopefully fun for you all too. So get to clicking...

Break time over…
You may have noticed that I’ve been distant from the blog this past month. In many ways, I took a much-needed break.

There has been a lot going on in my life, some of which I’ll eventually share with you all. But for now, I’ll simply declare break time over.

How many of you went out shopping at 5am on Black Friday?

I did.

I braved the mobs for great deals and waited in an incredibly long non-moving line with no roller coaster at the end of it.

Was it worth it?

I guess I’ll find out on Christmas morning.

As we rush full steam into the holidays…

I’ll do my best to get back into the bloginess of things.

Repeat after me: "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming..."

The 5K Walk and the Mysterious Lady in Red
One bright and early Saturday morning not too long ago, I met up with ‘M’ my trainer from physical therapy and NL of Noveltownand ABC23 for the Fall Festival 5K/10K run/walk at River Walk Park. Through bribery of Supreme Bean coffee, I convinced NL to do the 5K walk with me. A leisurely stroll in the park for NL, I soon learned that 5K is a lot farther than it sounds.

At check in we were given real race numbers and at 9:00 AM everyone lined up at the starting point as if it was the New York Marathon. Like Katie Holmes, I registered under an alias (my real name) instead of Matildakay.

‘M’ of coarse was doing the 10K run while pushing his son in a stroller. Show off!

There were other members from my physical therapy group participating in the race including a lady in red who kicks my butt regularly.

NL was a good friend and sport keeping pace with me when he could have left me in the dust. Even though we were among the last to finish, he had fun with his video camera and put together this little video of our 5K-walk experience.

“Go Matildakay!” ‘M’ yelled as he ran by pushing his stroller during the last half of the 5K walk.

“So annoying!”

“Why?” NL asked.

“Because he’s running 10K while pushing a stroller!”

“He’s a good trainer, he’s encouraging you.”

“I know. I just wish I could do that.”

We never did catch the mysterious lady in red from my physical therapy group, but she was at the finish line cheering me on. I managed to finish the 5K walk (just over 3 miles) in around 50 minutes, which is not too bad. And even though I was sore the rest of the day, I’m really glad that I challenged myself and accomplished the 5K walk.

“I read all about you.” NL told ‘M’ after the 5K walk.

“You read about me?” ‘M’ asked, “Oh right, I don’t want to know.”

“A lot of people read about you on Matildakay’s blog.”

“You’re famous.” I grinned. ‘M’ shook his head and walked away.

I’ll probably get double exercises for making ‘M’ famous. I thought.

But the following Monday…

“You get ‘extra points’ for doing the 5K walk.” ‘M’ said when I walked into physical therapy.

“Now you have to do the next run/walk we have scheduled.”

Oh no! What did I get myself into?

The Showtime link up
Last week the blog I wrote about my new favorite TV show Californication was linked on Showtime for four (4) days! Did you all hear that? Showtime’s website had a link to Matildakay.com for four wonderful days! Four days where I danced in the streets and sang show tunes in my linkage glee! Four days that I couldn’t post any other blogs (not even this one to tell you all about the amazing linkage) because Showtime linked up to Matildakay.com and not the individual Californication blog. (If I had posted anything new the Californication blog would have been buried under all the regular Matildakay blogginess and Showtime viewers would not have been able to find it.) Four days of constantly checking to see if my blog was still linked on Showtime. (I think they got more traffic out of me than I got out of them.) Four days of my writing being recognized on Showtime.

It was a wonderful four days of linkage!

Coincidentally the Showtime link up happened on the same day that someone else tried to convince me to completely rewrite a blog I had written, to change my writing style. I considered rewriting, but I couldn’t shake the negative feelings about the whole situation and my closest friends advised against rewriting. I eventually decided not to rewrite but instead to bask in being linked on Showtime while it lasted.

And the minute the Showtime link up ended… I headed out of town for a much needed girl’s day.

Eventually the show must go on as the theatre people say. So we now return to our regularly scheduled programming of Matildakay blogginess.

Californication
Writers are a strange breed. The good ones are disheveled, creative, brilliant and a little bit crazy. I always find it interesting to see how Hollywood portrays writers in movies and comedy series. Showtime has hit the nail on the head in Californication a new weekly comedy about a writer.

Californication

Californication is about Hank Moody played by David Duchovny, a writer from New York transplanted to Los Angeles and hating every minute of his LA life. Moody is a great name for this character. His book was turned into a successful movie that he hates and now he has a severe case of writer’s block. Hank is still in love with his ex-girlfriend, he’s trying to be a good father to his twelve-year-old daughter and he’s losing himself in casual sex. A lot of casual sex. It reminds me of that great line from Finding Forrester, Jamal: Women will sleep with you if you write a book? Forrester: Women will sleep with you if you write a bad book.” Hank Moody is living that line in spades. He says what he thinks no matter how off the wall it may be and it works. And yet underneath all the women and the crazy situations, lurks a good heart and a creative soul.

And I'm happy to see Evan Handler in another great show.

I haven’t been this excited about a show since HBO’s Sex and the City and Entourage. To steal a line from my guy friends, Californication rocks the monu-cock with its writing! It’s smart, hilarious, and pushes the boundaries the way Sex and the City did. David Duchovny has found a part he was born to play, he’s irreverent and endearingly sexy at the same time. You can’t help but fall in love with his bad boy/good guy persona.

I love how blogging has been incorporated into the show with Hank taking a job blogging for HelL A magazine. If Hollywood is blogging, then blogging has truly arrived.

Californication is on Showtime Monday nights at 10:30 PM. It’s definitely a show for adults with graphic language and nudity so put your kids to bed beforehand. Tune in and watch Californication you won’t be disappointed!

Yosemite Writers Conference: A Conversation about Blogging
In today’s world, blogging has become a way of life for many people and corporations. It’s an instantaneous way to connect with people. For writers, blogging should be a natural progression, a promotional tool and a way to personally reach readers and build a fan base.

This year’s Yosemite Writers Conference workshop, “Blogging Your Way to Fame” was taught by N.L. Belardes of ABC23 and Noveltown (noveltown.net/blog), Genevieve Choate of the Fresno Bee and Momologue, and Rik Bollman a Las Vegas writer/blogger and radio host, three individuals for whom blogging is not only a way of life, but a necessary part of being a writer. Three individuals who understood that blogging is not just posting a blog and hoping a handful of anonymous people on the Internet find it and read it. No, blogging is about so much more.

Blogging is about using your voice to capture attention for yourself as a writer and about using your voice as a community service. Blogging is about having a sense of integrity, being humble, and being smart about what you write. Blogging is not about what you ate for lunch, but rather it’s about getting out there in your community and finding original content to write about. Blogging is about having a conversation with people and that is what is truly unique about blogging.

Since blogging is a conversation with people, N.L., Genevieve, and Rik broke panel tradition and had a conversation with the workshop attendees about blogging. Everyone responded and interacted as if we were all sitting around an informal dinner table discussing blogging. For those who were new to the conversation, this method seemed to demystify blogging and make it less daunting. As a blogger myself, I felt this conversational format was most effective.

Gone was all the techy talk and html, instead the discussion centered on how writers can use blogging to build their author platform and a community of readers. By spending time on social networking sites such as myspace.com promoting your blog, book and/or yourself as a writer, by posting compelling content and updating your blog often and through grassroots promotion you can build a fan base and a platform that editors and agents will notice. Belardes stated, “You have to sacrifice time to promote yourself.” He also stressed the importance of having a presence on social networking sites.

Even though Belardes stated that blogging most likely won’t make you famous, he did discuss how blogging could help you get where you want to go as a writer, for you never know who’s reading your blog. In the blogosphere, if you build it they will come. Blogging will grow an audience for your writing.

It was prearranged for me to help people in the workshop immediately sign up for a blog. With laptops available, I was able to answer questions and help a few people sign up at the end of the blogging workshop and later that evening in the Tenaya Lodge Jackalope restaurant. I think it was helpful for those new to blogging to have a computer and a person available to walk them through the process of setting up their blog. Hopefully they will continue their journey into the blogosphere and towards building an audience.

Some Annoying Cats have Talent
Some annoying cats have talent. Like Nora, the piano playing annoying cat and Internet star, her youtube video has had 2.5 million views.

Watch the musical stylings of annoying cat Nora:

My little old cat lady neighbor’s annoying cats are not in the same league as Nora. No, their talents are: lazily lounging in my yard, eerily staring me down, pacing back and forth on the window ledges, creepy close encounters, waking me up at night with their cat-wailing and moaning and sex-screaming – cat sex rendezvous’ outside my bedroom window, using my yard as their personal toilet and killing birds and leaving their remains for me to find.

I do have a piano, but there is no way in hell I’m letting any of those annoying cats into my house to play it. I don’t think I’d do it even for 2.5 million unique visitors to my blog.

No, I think things are better left the way they are between the annoying cats and myself. Them being the bane of my existence and me plotting their demise by air pistol or any other of the various fun suggestions readers and friends have made. They’re lucky I still brake for annoying cats on my street!

Dysfunction and Beauty
When a celebrity who is my age (well close enough, I’ll be 39 in 3 months) dies, like everyone else, I couldn’t help but be mesmerized by the media blitz and online articles that flooded the Internet as the world reported her death and tried to figure out what made us care so much about Anna Nicole Smith?

Just what was Anna Nicole Smith? Actress? Model? Reality star? Rich Widow?

“I don’t know exactly what she did.” "The View co-host Joy Behar said trying to figure out why we watched this strange woman over the years, she came up with two things: Dysfunction. And beauty."

“No question, she was beautiful,” Behar said. “We know people like to watch dysfunction. But beauty gives you something extra to look at. Dysfunction and beauty: Now that’s something to watch.”

Dysfunction and beauty! This description fascinated me.

No question Anna Nicole Smith was beautiful! No question that her life was tragically dysfunctional and on display in the tabloids.

Dysfunction and beauty. Two things the world lusts for and obsesses over.

Dysfunction and beauty. It’s that crazy mix that makes us date attractive people with drama filled lives. You just want to fix them, change them, make them into the perfect person that you envision yourself being with. But no matter how hard you try to fix them, you still end up with that crazy mix of dysfunction and beauty. And we stay with that dysfunctional beautiful person until we can’t take the drama anymore and then we go find someone more compatible to date.

But why are we drawn to dysfunction and beauty?

It was Anna Nicole Smith’s dysfunction and beauty that made her the perfect pop culture icon. It was hard to watch her. And, harder not to.
